It's time for another exciting Crawley Town match, and this time, we're up against Cambridge United. Cambridge United, also known as "The U’s," have a history dating back to their founding in 1912 as Abbey United. The club took on its current name in 1951 and has since experienced a rollercoaster journey through the English football league system. They began in local amateur leagues before making their way into the Southern League, eventually earning their place in the Football League in 1970. Their climb up the leagues was marked by notable achievements, including back-to-back Southern League Premier Division titles in 1968–69 and 1969–70. Under the management of John Beck, Cambridge United enjoyed a golden period in the early 1990s, securing promotions and even reaching the Second Division play-offs. However, the club also faced tough times, enduring multiple relegations that saw them drop to the fourth tier and eventually into the Conference. After nine challenging seasons in non-league football, they made a triumphant return to the Football League in 2014. Most recently, in 2021, Cambridge United earned promotion to League One, where they’ve been battling to establish themselves ever since. Cambridge United kicked off their League One campaign this season with a 2-0 loss to Stockport, a result that they’ll be looking to bounce back from as they face Crawley.
